Zweigelt is Austria’s most widely planted red grape variety, celebrated for its vibrant character and versatility. On the nose, Zweigelt typically exhibits aromas of ripe red cherry, cranberry, and raspberry, underpinned by subtle notes of violet and black pepper. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with juicy red fruit flavours, gentle tannins, and a fresh, lively acidity, often complemented by hints of spice and delicate herbal undertones.
The grape thrives in Austria's key wine-growing regions, particularly in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Burgenland, and Carnuntum, where it benefits from warm days and cool nights. While Austria is the heartland for Zweigelt, small plantings can also be found in Hungary, Germany, and Canada.
Zweigelt is most commonly made in a fruit-forward, youthful style, intended for early consumption, though premium examples may see oak ageing, resulting in greater complexity and structure. It is often crafted as a varietal wine but may also contribute to red blends.
Zweigelt pairs beautifully with a range of dishes such as roasted poultry, pork tenderloin, duck, grilled vegetables, and soft cheeses. Its moderate tannins and vibrant fruitiness make it especially well-suited to lightly spiced cuisine and charcuterie.
