Gamaret is a red grape variety originally developed in Switzerland, now highly regarded for its ability to produce expressive and structured wines. Aromatically, Gamaret offers a vibrant bouquet combining ripe blackberries, black cherries and subtle plum notes, lifted by engaging hints of black pepper, liquorice and delicate floral undertones such as violet. On the palate, the wines are medium to full-bodied, showcasing smooth tannins and a balanced acidity that lend both freshness and depth. Often, gentle oak maturation imparts nuances of sweet spice, cocoa and tobacco.
Gamaret thrives primarily in Switzerland, where it is especially prominent in Vaud, Geneva and Valais, as well as select areas of Haute-Savoie in France. The grape is typically crafted into varietal wines but is also valued in blends for its colour intensity, aromatic richness and structure.
Typical wine styles range from youthful, fruit-forward reds to more complex, barrel-aged versions with ageing potential. Gamaret pairs exceptionally well with a range of dishes: classic matches include duck, game birds, lamb or grilled beef, as well as hearty vegetable stews, mushroom risottos and mature Swiss cheeses. Its aromatic complexity and supple texture make it a versatile partner for both refined and rustic cuisine.
