Fendant, known internationally as Chasselas, is the signature white grape variety of Switzerland’s Valais region. It produces elegantly delicate wines with a pale straw colour and a subtle aromatic profile. The nose offers gentle notes of freshly cut grass, green apple, white peach and a hint of citrus blossom, occasionally complemented by nuances of flint or wet stone reflecting its alpine terroir. On the palate, Fendant is refreshingly light, with a crisp minerality, moderate acidity, and a smooth, rounded texture. These attributes create a harmonious balance, resulting in a clean, dry finish.
The Valais is the heartland of Fendant production, benefiting from abundant sunshine and well-drained soils along the Rhône Valley. While other Swiss regions such as Vaud also grow Chasselas, Fendant from Valais is distinguished by its purity and finesse. Typical styles include still, unoaked white wines that emphasise freshness and subtlety; some producers craft sparkling versions as well.
Fendant’s understated character makes it exceptionally versatile at the table. It pairs effortlessly with Swiss raclette and fondue, fresh goat’s cheese, delicate fish dishes, and light vegetable salads. Its crisp profile also provides an excellent contrast to charcuterie and soft, bloomy rind cheeses.
