Gutedel, internationally known as Chasselas, is a white grape variety renowned for its subtle finesse and delicacy. The aromatic profile typically features gentle notes of green apple, fresh pear, and white flowers, with occasional hints of citrus and almonds. On the palate, Gutedel wines are light to medium-bodied, offering a soft texture and crisp acidity that imparts refreshing vibrancy. Often, nuances of minerality emerge, especially when grown on limestone soils, adding to its elegance and complexity.
Prominent in Baden, Germany—particularly the Markgräflerland district—Gutedel is also cultivated in Switzerland’s Lake Geneva region and, to a lesser extent, France’s Loire and Savoie areas. The styles produced are usually dry or off-dry still wines, although some sparkling interpretations exist. These wines are typically best enjoyed young, celebrating their freshness and purity.
Gutedel pairs gracefully with light dishes. It complements poached fish, shellfish, and steamed vegetables, as well as subtle Asian cuisine and soft cheeses such as goat’s cheese or brie. Its understated fruit character and delicate acidity make it a versatile partner, especially with simple salads, white asparagus, or freshly baked breads.
