Petit Meslier is a rare, ancient white grape variety traditionally grown in the Champagne region of France. It forms part of the select group of permitted varieties for Champagne production, prized for its natural high acidity and vivid aromatic expression. On the nose and palate, Petit Meslier offers vibrant notes of green apple, fresh lime, pear, and subtle herbaceous undertones, occasionally complemented by hints of white flowers and a characteristic zesty minerality. Its refreshing acidity imparts energy and longevity, making it particularly valued in blends to lend vivacity and complexity.
Though cultivation remains limited, its principal viticultural home is Champagne, particularly in cooler microclimates where ripening is slow and flavours are concentrated. Petit Meslier is typically used as a blending component in Champagne, contributing freshness and aromatic lift, but a small number of producers now bottle it as a varietal wine, showcasing its distinctive bright and crisp profile.
For food pairings, Petit Meslier is an excellent match with fresh seafood such as oysters, scallops, and prawns, as well as delicate goat’s cheese and lightly dressed salads. Its lively acidity also complements white fish ceviche and tempura vegetables, making it exceptionally versatile at the table.
