The grape variety Feteasca Neagra

Feteasca Neagra is an indigenous Romanian grape variety, widely considered one of the country’s most emblematic reds. On the nose, it exhibits an expressive bouquet of dark berries such as blackcurrant and blackberry, complemented by aromas of dried plums, violets, and subtle spicy undertones reminiscent of black pepper and liquorice. On the palate, Feteasca Neagra typically displays medium to full body with velvety tannins, lively acidity, and flavours echoing the dark fruit profile, alongside notes of chocolate, vanilla, and a hint of smokiness with ageing.

The principal viticultural regions for Feteasca Neagra include Moldova, Muntenia, and Dobrogea in Romania, as well as neighbouring Moldova, where the grape thrives in continental climates with favourable sun exposure. Winemakers produce it in a variety of styles, from youthful and fruit-forward to more complex, oak-matured expressions capable of excellent ageing potential.
