The grape variety Cinsaut

Cinsaut is a versatile red grape variety renowned for its contribution to both blended and varietal wines. Distinguished by its delicate aromatics, Cinsaut typically presents lively notes of red berries such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, often complemented by subtle floral and spicy undertones. On the palate, it delivers light to medium body with soft tannins, bright acidity, and a fresh, fruit-driven character, occasionally displaying hints of garrigue or earthy nuances.

Originating from the southern regions of France, Cinsaut thrives particularly in the Languedoc and Southern Rhône Valley. It is also widely cultivated in South Africa, where it is known as ‘Hermitage’, and in other warm Mediterranean climates, including parts of Australia and Lebanon.

Cinsaut is predominantly used in rosé production, especially in Provence, yielding crisp, elegant wines with vibrant fruit flavours. As a red wine, whether varietal or in blends—most notably with Grenache or Syrah—it offers approachability and freshness, making it ideal for early drinking.

For food pairings, Cinsaut excels alongside Mediterranean cuisine, grilled vegetables, roasted poultry, and charcuterie. Its supple structure and juicy profile also make it a delightful match with lamb, tomato-based dishes, and mild cheeses. Serve slightly chilled for optimal enjoyment.
