Oseleta is a rare, indigenous red grape variety originating from the Veneto region in north-eastern Italy, particularly associated with the Valpolicella and Amarone della Valpolicella wine areas. It was nearly lost to history but has been revived in recent decades for its unique character and depth. Wines produced from Oseleta typically exhibit a deep, inky colour with pronounced tannins and notable acidity, which contribute to excellent structure and ageing potential. On the nose and palate, Oseleta reveals intense aromas of dark berries such as blackberry and black cherry, accompanied by notes of wild herbs, black pepper, and, with age, hints of leather and tobacco. Its firm, yet refined tannic structure is complemented by a fresh, persistent finish.
Oseleta is most often used in blends for Valpolicella Superiore and Amarone wines, where it adds power and complexity, but some producers now vinify it as a varietal wine, showcasing its robust profile. Ideal food pairings include rich meat dishes such as braised beef, game, lamb, or hearty stews. Hard cheeses, such as mature Pecorino or aged Parmesan, also harmonise beautifully with Oseleta’s intensity and acidity.
