Mondeuse is an indigenous grape variety from the Savoie region in France, renowned for its unique and expressive character. In the glass, Mondeuse reveals a deep purple hue and offers an aromatic profile marked by vibrant notes of blackberries, blueberries, violets and black pepper, often complemented by subtle earthy undertones. On the palate, it delivers a medium to full body with lively acidity and firm yet refined tannins. The flavour profile often features ripe dark fruit, hints of spice, and occasionally a touch of smoky or leathery nuance, making for a fresh and slightly rustic wine.
The primary viticultural home of Mondeuse is the Savoie region, particularly around the towns of Arbin and St-Jean-de-la-Porte; small plantings are also found in the adjoining regions of Bugey and, increasingly, in select sites of the New World. Mondeuse is most commonly vinified as a varietal red wine that can be enjoyed young for its vibrancy or matured for added complexity. It is also occasionally blended with other local varieties to create harmonious regional expressions.
Ideal food pairings include Savoyard specialities like charcuterie and raclette, as well as grilled lamb, duck, wild game, and earthy mushroom dishes, which beautifully complement the grape’s perfumed, peppery character.
