Prosecco, known by its grape name Glera, is a white varietal native to the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions of north-eastern Italy. Renowned for its vibrant and refreshing character, Glera typically produces wines with a delicate aromatic profile. Notes of green apple, pear, white peach and citrus zest dominate, often complemented by hints of acacia blossom and fresh herbs. The palate is characteristically light-bodied with lively acidity, imparting a crisp and clean finish.
Prosecco wines are primarily crafted as sparkling or semi-sparkling (spumante and frizzante), though still versions also exist. The most esteemed examples originate from the DOCG subregions of Conegliano Valdobbiadene and Asolo, where the microclimate and soils lend finesse and elegance to the wines.
Typically, Prosecco presents a fresh and youthful style, with approachable fruitiness and subtle creaminess from gentle bubbles. It is best enjoyed young to preserve its vibrant character. Ideal food pairings include light antipasti, seafood, sushi, prosciutto, fresh salads and mild cheeses. It also makes an excellent aperitif, and its versatility lends itself beautifully to celebratory occasions and cocktails, such as the classic Bellini.
