Premetta, also known as Prié Rouge, is an indigenous red grape variety primarily grown in the Valle d’Aosta region in north-western Italy. This rare and distinctive grape produces wines that are light in colour, with a pale ruby hue and a delicate, graceful structure. The aromatic profile is subtle yet expressive, featuring notes of wild strawberries, cranberry, fresh herbs, and delicate floral undertones, sometimes with a hint of pepper or alpine earthiness. On the palate, Premetta wines are typically light-bodied, with fresh acidity, low tannins, and a lingering, crisp finish, making them highly approachable and refreshing.
Premetta thrives in the cool, mountainous terroirs of the Valle d’Aosta, where elevations and a continental climate preserve the grapes’ natural acidity and fragrance. The most common styles include varietal reds and light rosés, often made with minimal oak influence in order to showcase the grape’s intrinsic vibrancy.
When it comes to food pairing, Premetta’s delicacy and freshness make it an excellent accompaniment for charcuterie, alpine cheeses, grilled trout, and vegetable tarts. Its bright acidity also allows it to pair beautifully with light poultry dishes and traditional Valdostan cuisine.
