Red Grape Variety

Premetta is an ancient red grape variety native to the Aosta Valley in north-western Italy. This unique grape yields wines with an enticing aromatic profile, characterised by delicate scents of wild strawberries, raspberries, red cherries, and subtle floral notes such as violets. On the palate, Premetta wines are light to medium-bodied, offering refreshing acidity, gentle tannins, and a crisp, dry finish. There are often hints of alpine herbs and spicy nuances, enhancing the wine’s vibrancy and sense of place.

The principal region for Premetta cultivation is the Valle d'Aosta, particularly around the commune of Pré-Saint-Didier. Extremely limited in production, Premetta is typically vinified as a varietal wine, sometimes labelled as 'Prié Rouge' under the Valle d’Aosta DOC.

Premetta wines are typically enjoyed young to preserve their fresh fruit character and lively acidity. They complement a variety of dishes, particularly those showcasing the local alpine cuisine. Recommended pairings include cured meats such as bresaola, soft cheeses like Fontina, grilled trout, mushroom risotto, and herb-roasted chicken. Its supple structure and bright freshness make it an ideal match for vegetable-based dishes and appetisers, providing an authentic taste of the Italian Alps.
