Fumin is an indigenous red grape variety predominantly cultivated in the Valle d’Aosta region of north-western Italy. This variety is famed for its deep colour and expressive character. On the nose, Fumin typically exhibits a complex bouquet of wild berries, black cherry, violet, and hints of herbal undertones, often complemented by subtle notes of spice, smoke, and earthy nuances. On the palate, Fumin wines are structured yet elegant, offering firm tannins, lively acidity, and a long, persistent finish, with flavours echoing forest fruits, dried herbs, pepper, and occasional mineral hints.
While Valle d’Aosta remains its primary stronghold, small experimental plantings can occasionally be found in neighbouring alpine regions. Fumin is most frequently produced as a varietal wine, but it is also blended with other local grapes such as Petit Rouge or Nebbiolo to add depth and colour.
These robust wines pair particularly well with regional alpine cuisine. Recommended food pairings include game dishes such as venison or wild boar, hearty stews, mushroom risotto, matured mountain cheeses, and charcuterie. The wine’s combination of aromatic complexity and fresh acidity makes it exceptionally versatile at the table.
