The grape variety Petit Rouge

Petit Rouge is a distinctive indigenous grape variety found almost exclusively in the Valle d’Aosta region of north-western Italy. Renowned for its vibrant ruby hue, Petit Rouge gives rise to wines with a captivating aromatic profile. On the nose, it offers delicate notes of wild berries, especially raspberries and blackcurrants, intertwined with subtle floral hints and a touch of spicy pepper. On the palate, Petit Rouge is typically medium-bodied with lively acidity, soft tannins, and an elegant, fresh fruit character balanced by a gentle minerality.

Most notably cultivated in subzones such as Torrette, Chambave, and Enfer d’Arvier, Petit Rouge is the backbone of several DOC wines, both as a single varietal and in blends. Petit Rouge pairs harmoniously with the region’s rustic cuisine. It complements charcuterie, mature cheeses, grilled sausages, mushroom risotto, and polenta-based dishes particularly well.
