Alicante, also known as Alicante Bouschet, is a teinturier grape renowned for its deeply coloured flesh and juice, setting it apart from most red wine grapes. On the nose, Alicante typically offers robust aromas of dark cherries, ripe plums, blackberries, and subtle herbaceous notes, often complemented by hints of spice, tobacco, and earthy undertones. The palate tends to be full-bodied and intense, delivering juicy dark fruit flavours with noticeable tannins and refreshing acidity, often culminating in a structured, lingering finish.
The grape is predominantly cultivated in southern France, particularly in the Languedoc and Provence regions, as well as in Spain and Portugal, where it is called Garnacha Tintorera. It also has a presence in California and southern Italy. Alicante is frequently used in blends to enhance colour and add depth, but it is increasingly vinified as a single-varietal wine, offering an appealing, bold expression.
Typical wine styles range from approachable, fruit-forward reds to structured, age-worthy wines. Alicante pairs exceptionally well with hearty dishes such as grilled lamb, beef stews, rich casseroles, and mature cheeses, making it a versatile choice for robust, flavoursome cuisine.
