Zibibbo, also known as Muscat of Alexandria, is an ancient aromatic grape variety renowned for its expressive profile. On the nose, Zibibbo typically offers intense and captivating aromas of orange blossom, jasmine, rose petals, and ripe stone fruits such as peach and apricot, accented by fresh citrus notes and a hint of exotic spice. The palate is equally vibrant, with a harmonious balance of aromatic richness, refreshing acidity, and occasional subtle mineral undertones.
Zibibbo is predominantly cultivated in Southern Italy, particularly in Sicily, with the island of Pantelleria being especially noted for producing exceptional examples. Here, it thrives in volcanic soils, benefitting from warm, sun-drenched conditions.
Typical wine styles include both dry and sweet interpretations, with the semi-aromatic Moscato and the renowned Passito di Pantelleria, a luscious dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes, being the most celebrated. Dry Zibibbo wines are characterful, light to medium-bodied, and distinctly floral, while their sweet counterparts are remarkably concentrated, luscious, and persistent.
Zibibbo pairs beautifully with spicy North African dishes, aromatic curries, and fresh shellfish. The sweeter styles complement blue cheeses, almond-based pastries, and classic Sicilian desserts such as cannoli and cassata, making Zibibbo a versatile choice for both savoury and sweet culinary experiences.
