White Grapes

Malvasia delle Lipari, a white grape variety indigenous to the Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily, is celebrated for producing wines of exquisite aromatic complexity and elegance. The bouquet typically reveals pronounced notes of apricot, candied citrus peel, honey, dried figs, and orange blossom, often complemented by hints of aromatic herbs and sweet spices. The palate is lush yet balanced, offering a harmonious interplay between vibrant acidity and a lingering sweetness, particularly in the passito (dessert wine) interpretations.

This grape is grown predominantly on the volcanic soils of Lipari and neighbouring islands, where the maritime climate encourages the development of its distinctive character. Malvasia delle Lipari is most acclaimed for its passito style, in which dried grapes yield concentrated, amber-hued wines with a velvety texture. Dry and semi-dry styles also exist, characterised by freshness and expressive aromatics.

Ideal pairings include blue cheeses such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort, almond-based pastries, dried fruit desserts, and Sicilian cannoli. The richness and aromatic intensity of Malvasia delle Lipari wines also make them an excellent match for foie gras or to be enjoyed as a refined meditation wine at the end of a meal.
