Red Grape Variety

Nocera is an ancient and distinctive red grape variety indigenous to Sicily, predominantly cultivated in the provinces of Messina and, to a lesser extent, on the slopes of Mt Etna. This grape is renowned for producing wines with a deep ruby hue and remarkable clarity. On the nose, Nocera typically expresses vibrant aromas of black cherry, ripe plum, wild blackberry, and subtle floral undertones, complemented by hints of Mediterranean herbs and a gentle earthiness. The palate is marked by bright acidity, moderate tannins, and a notable freshness that enhances the purity of its fruit-driven profile, often leading to an elegant, mineral-backed finish.

Winemakers utilise Nocera primarily in varietal wines and as a blending component in DOCs such as Faro and Mamertino, where it brings structure and aromatic lift. Nocera wines are generally medium-bodied yet display an impressive intensity and complexity, well-suited to both early enjoyment and short-term cellaring.

Ideal food pairings for Nocera include grilled lamb, Sicilian caponata, aubergine parmigiana, and hard Mediterranean cheeses. Its vivid acidity and savoury depth make it a versatile partner for a wide range of richly flavoured Italian dishes.
