White Grapes

Minnella is an ancient and rare white grape variety native to Sicily, particularly thriving on the slopes of Mount Etna. The name ‘Minnella’ derives from the Sicilian word for ‘little breast’, which refers to the distinct, small, and tapered shape of the berries. On the nose, Minnella expresses delicate aromatic nuances, typically revealing notes of white peach, green apple, lemon zest, wildflowers, and subtle hints of almond. The palate is characterised by a lively freshness, medium body, and a mineral backbone imparted by Etna’s volcanic soils. Flavours mirror the aromatic profile, enhanced by crisp acidity and a lingering, slightly savoury finish.

Minnella is predominantly cultivated in the Etna DOC appellation, where it is often blended with other indigenous varieties such as Carricante and Catarratto, but it is increasingly vinified as a single varietal to showcase its unique character. Typical wine styles range from dry, refreshing whites to more complex, barrel-aged expressions with enhanced texture and depth. Minnella pairs exceptionally well with fresh seafood, shellfish, lightly grilled fish, vegetable risottos, and soft cheeses. Its clean, mineral-driven profile also complements Mediterranean cuisine, particularly dishes featuring citrus, herbs, and olive oil.
