Carricante is an indigenous white grape variety from Sicily, particularly celebrated on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. Renowned for its marked freshness, Carricante expresses an elegant aromatic profile characterised by citrus notes, green apple, white flowers, and often subtle hints of anise and flinty minerality derived from the volcanic soils. On the palate, it offers vibrant acidity, moderate alcohol, and a distinctive saline finish that imparts both finesse and complexity.
The principal viticultural heartland for Carricante lies in the Etna DOC, especially in the eastern and southern sectors of the volcano, where the altitude and unique terroir profoundly influence the grape’s character. It is predominantly vinified as a single varietal wine or as the main component in Etna Bianco blends.
Typical styles range from crisp, unoaked, youthful expressions to more structured examples possibly aged on lees, which develop greater texture and depth. Carricante wines are well-suited to seafood such as oysters, grilled fish, and shellfish, as well as to vegetable risottos and delicate poultry dishes. Their vibrant acidity also makes them an excellent accompaniment to fresh goat’s cheeses and Mediterranean-inspired salads.
