The grape variety Nerello Cappuccio

Nerello Cappuccio is a traditional red grape variety most commonly associated with the volcanic slopes of Sicily, particularly in the Etna DOC and surrounding regions. Renowned for its vibrant aromatic profile, Nerello Cappuccio showcases notes of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and subtle hints of violet, often complemented by delicate herbal undertones and a gentle spiciness. On the palate, the wines are medium-bodied with soft tannins and a refreshing acidity, contributing to a well-balanced and approachable structure. While often blended with Nerello Mascalese in Etna Rosso wines to add colour and aromatic lift, varietal expressions of Nerello Cappuccio reveal its juicy fruit character and supple texture.

The primary growing areas include Sicily’s Etna and Calabria, where the grape thrives in volcanic soils. Typical wine styles range from fragrant, youthful reds ideal for early drinking to more complex blends that benefit from short to medium cellaring. Nerello Cappuccio pairs exceptionally well with Mediterranean cuisine, such as grilled vegetables, roasted poultry, mushroom risotto, and mildly spiced lamb dishes, as well as aged pecorino cheese, enhancing both savoury and herbal notes in the dishes.
