Verdeca is a white grape variety predominantly cultivated in the Puglia and, to a lesser extent, in the Campania and Basilicata regions of Southern Italy. This grape is distinguished by its fresh, vibrant acidity and subtle aromatic profile. Verdeca wines typically exhibit delicate aromas of green apple, citrus peel, white peach and often carry herbaceous undertones, such as fresh-cut grass or fennel. On the palate, Verdeca is light to medium-bodied, offering crisp, mineral-driven flavours supported by a lively acidity, which grants the wines exceptional freshness and a clean, zesty finish.
Verdeca is most often vinified as a dry, single-varietal wine, though it also contributes to blends, particularly in DOC wines such as Locorotondo and Martina Franca. The wines are generally unoaked to preserve their natural brightness and purity of fruit. Verdeca’s crisp character makes it a versatile companion at the table. It excels with a variety of seafood, light salads, grilled vegetables, and soft cheeses. Its refreshing acidity also complements shellfish and dishes featuring aromatic herbs, making Verdeca an excellent choice for Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.
