Pelaverga is an ancient and rare red grape variety primarily cultivated in the Piedmont region of north-western Italy, particularly around Verduno in the province of Cuneo. The resulting wines are renowned for their distinctive aromatic profile, offering pronounced notes of wild strawberries, white pepper, rose petals, and gentle herbal nuances. On the palate, Pelaverga wines typically display a light to medium body, lively acidity, and elegant tannins, providing a fresh yet delicate structure with persistent, savoury length.
The most notable expressions are found in Verduno, where the grape is vinified to create dry red wines that showcase the varietal's finesse and aromatic complexity. While generally produced as single-varietal wines, some blends exist in other Piedmontese sub-regions.
Pelaverga pairs superbly with a wide range of dishes. Its lively freshness and subtle spice complement antipasti, cured meats, and soft cheeses, while the wine’s delicacy makes it a fine match for poultry, roasted vegetables, and light pasta dishes. It can also enhance the flavours of traditional Piedmontese fare, notably vitello tonnato and agnolotti del plin, highlighting the region’s culinary heritage. Serve slightly chilled for maximum enjoyment.
