Arneis is a distinguished white grape varietal originating from Italy’s north-western Piedmont region, particularly esteemed in the Roero appellation. This grape produces wines with a delicate bouquet, often displaying enticing aromas of white peach, pear, apricot, and subtle hints of almond blossom and fresh herbs. On the palate, Arneis is typically medium-bodied with a refined acidity, offering flavours of ripe stone fruits, citrus, and a characteristic minerality, complemented by a slight nuttiness on the finish.
While Piedmont is the heartland of Arneis cultivation, smaller plantings can also be found in Liguria and in New World regions such as Australia and California, where the grape is gaining recognition for its unique profile.
Arneis wines are most commonly produced in a dry, still style, highlighting their crisp freshness and aromatic complexity. Occasionally, limited sparkling or late-harvest versions may be encountered.
This varietal’s versatile character makes it an excellent partner for food. It pairs particularly well with seafood, shellfish, and lighter poultry dishes, as well as vegetable-based starters like risotto or asparagus. Its rich texture and subtle bitterness also complement mild cheeses and dishes featuring herbs or white meats, enhancing both classic and contemporary cuisine.
