The grape variety Lacrima

Lacrima is a distinctive red grape variety primarily cultivated in the Marche region of central Italy, especially around the town of Morro d’Alba. Characterised by its deeply aromatic profile, Lacrima wines offer an intense bouquet highlighted by notes of fresh violets, wild roses, and subtle hints of red berries such as cherry and raspberry. On the palate, these wines are typically medium-bodied and graceful, revealing soft tannins, bright acidity, and lingering floral and berry undertones, often accompanied by a gentle spiciness.

The main style produced is Lacrima di Morro d’Alba DOC, crafted both as dry and semi-dry reds, sometimes with a frizzante (lightly sparkling) version reflecting local tradition. The wines are usually youthful, meant to be enjoyed within a few years of bottling to fully appreciate their vibrant, perfumed character.

Lacrima pairs beautifully with a variety of foods, excelling alongside cured meats, herbed roast chicken, pork, and soft cheeses. Its delicate florality and zingy fruit profile also complement dishes featuring tomatoes or Mediterranean herbs, making it a versatile choice for both casual settings and refined dining experiences.
