Tocai Friulano, now officially labelled as ‘Friulano’ in Italy and also known as ‘Tuchì’ in the Lombardy region, is a distinctive white grape variety celebrated for its vibrant personality. On the nose, it offers an intriguing bouquet of wildflowers, almond blossom, pear, and delicate herbal nuances, often accompanied by a subtle hint of citrus zest and bitter almond. The palate is typically dry and medium-bodied, displaying crisp acidity and a textured mouthfeel. Flavours mirror the aromatic profile, with yellow apple, green plum, citrus, and a characteristic bitter-almond finish, lending the wine both complexity and freshness.
This grape thrives primarily in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy and in Lombardy’s Oltrepò Pavese, where it produces its most expressive and refined examples. Friulano wines are usually vinified as varietals, both in still and occasionally sparkling forms.
Friulano pairs exceptionally well with local cuisine. Its freshness and subtle bitterness complement cured hams such as Prosciutto di San Daniele, rich seafood dishes, asparagus, soft cheeses, and traditional risottos. Served chilled, it is an excellent choice for aperitifs or to accompany light starters and vegetable-based dishes, making it a versatile companion at the dining table.
