Riesling Italico, distinct from the more renowned Riesling, is a versatile white grape variety predominantly grown in Central and Eastern Europe, notably in Hungary, Italy (as Welschriesling), Slovenia, Austria, and Croatia. This grape produces wines ranging from light, refreshing styles to more structured, late-harvest versions. Aromatically, Riesling Italico typically displays delicate notes of green apple, pear, citrus blossom, and subtle hints of white flower and fresh herbs. On the palate, the wines are characterised by bright acidity, medium body, and lively freshness, often concluding with a crisp, mineral-driven finish.
In the glass, Riesling Italico expresses a clean and straightforward fruit profile, making it particularly well-suited to dry and off-dry interpretations, as well as lightly sparkling wines such as Hungarian Fröccs and Croatian gemišt. In warmer vintages or with extended ripening, it can develop more complex flavours of stone fruit and honeyed nuances.
Riesling Italico complements a variety of dishes. It pairs excellently with freshwater fish, light poultry, vegetable risottos, and mildly tangy cheeses. Its mouth-watering acidity and gentle fruit notes also make it an ideal companion for salads, appetisers, and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.
