Schiava, also known locally as Vernatsch, is a traditional red grape variety native to the Alpine foothills of northern Italy, particularly the Alto Adige (Südtirol) and Trentino regions. This variety produces wines that are pale ruby in colour, offering a light body and moderate acidity. The aromatic profile is highly distinctive, marked by delicate notes of red cherry, wild strawberry, almond, and subtle floral nuances such as violets. On the palate, Schiava delivers a refreshing, supple texture with soft tannins and a lingering, slightly bitter finish reminiscent of bitter almonds.
The principal winemaking regions for Schiava are situated in Alto Adige, notably the areas surrounding Lake Caldaro (Kalterersee) and the village of Santa Maddalena (St. Magdalener), where the grape thrives in cool, well-ventilated vineyards. Schiava is typically crafted in a dry, youthful style designed for immediate consumption, though premium selections may show greater complexity and ageing potential.
These wines pair effortlessly with a variety of dishes. They are particularly well suited to cured meats, mild cheeses, roasted poultry, and traditional Alpine fare such as speck or light game. Served slightly chilled, Schiava makes for a versatile and elegant accompaniment to a wide range of culinary occasions.
