The grape variety Schiava Gentile

Schiava Gentile, a traditional grape variety predominantly found in the Alto Adige (Südtirol) region of northern Italy, is renowned for producing light-bodied, aromatic red wines. Its wines offer a delicate bouquet marked by vibrant notes of red cherry, wild strawberry, and subtle hints of almond and floral nuances, often reminiscent of violets. On the palate, Schiava Gentile is characterised by soft tannins, moderate acidity, and a refreshing finish, making it exceptionally approachable and easy-drinking.

The primary viticultural regions for Schiava Gentile are the slopes around Bolzano and Caldaro, where the cool Alpine climate and gravelly soils enhance the grape’s aromatic finesse and elegance. Typically, the variety is vinified as a single varietal, resulting in wines that are light ruby in colour and best enjoyed young to preserve their fragrant character.

Schiava Gentile pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, complementing light charcuterie, cured meats, mild cheeses, and traditional Tyrolean fare such as speck. Its freshness and supple structure also make it an excellent partner for roasted white meats, grilled vegetables, and savoury tarts.
