Scimiscià is a rare white grape variety native to Liguria, primarily cultivated in the eastern provinces, notably around the area of Tigullio. This indigenous varietal produces wines remarkable for their vibrant aromatic profile, characterised by notes of ripe pear, white peach, Mediterranean herbs, and subtle floral undertones, alongside a delicately saline minerality evocative of the coastal terroir. On the palate, Scimiscià wines display a lively freshness, medium body, and balanced acidity, offering flavours of citrus zest, green apple, and a gentle almond finish.
The principal wine styles crafted from Scimiscià are dry, still whites, occasionally blended with other local varietals to enhance complexity and structure. While generally vinified in stainless steel to preserve purity of fruit and freshness, some producers experiment with brief lees ageing for additional texture and aromatic depth.
Scimiscià pairs particularly well with Ligurian cuisine, complementing seafood risottos, grilled white fish, shellfish, and herb-infused pasta dishes such as trofie al pesto. Its crispness also makes it a fine partner for fresh goat’s cheese and vegetable antipasti. With its unique coastal character and gastronomic versatility, Scimiscià offers an authentic taste of Ligurian viticulture.
