Friulano is a distinguished white grape variety predominantly cultivated in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy. It produces wines with a vibrant yet elegant character, marked by a straw-yellow hue and subtle greenish reflections. On the nose, Friulano offers delicate aromas of almond, wildflowers, citrus fruits, and sometimes hints of ripe pear or apricot. The palate is dry and well-balanced, revealing fresh acidity paired with a gentle, slightly oily texture, and a distinct almond-like finish – a signature trait of the varietal.
Beyond Friuli, limited but noteworthy plantings exist in neighbouring regions such as Veneto and Slovenia, where it is sometimes known as Sauvignonasse. Typical styles include varietal, unoaked expressions focussing on freshness and minerality, and occasionally richer versions with brief lees contact for added complexity.
Friulano is exceptionally versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with prosciutto di San Daniele, mild salumi, fresh cheeses, spring vegetable risottos, and delicate seafood dishes. Its lively acidity and subtle nutty undertones make it an excellent complement to both traditional Friulian cuisine and a wide variety of international dishes.
