Picolit is an esteemed and rare white grape variety hailing predominantly from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. Renowned for its delicacy and elegance, Picolit wines display a luminous golden hue and exhibit an enchanting aromatic profile characterised by notes of acacia blossom, honey, apricot, peach, candied orange peel, and gentle hints of almond. On the palate, these wines are refined and harmonious, often medium-sweet to sweet, with vibrant acidity balancing their natural richness. The mouthfeel is silky yet lively, sometimes with mineral or herbal undertones offering complexity and finesse.
The principal region cultivating Picolit is the Colli Orientali del Friuli, where it is traditionally vinified as a passito-style dessert wine, produced from partially dried grapes to concentrate flavours and sugars. While most Picolit wines are sweet, limited dry expressions may occasionally be found. Production is extremely limited due to the grape’s tendency towards poor fruit set, thus adding to its exclusivity.
Picolit pairs exquisitely with delicate desserts, blue cheeses, foie gras, or elegant pastries like almond tart. It also serves as a fine accompaniment to refined appetisers or can stand alone as a contemplative after-dinner wine.
