Montuni is a rare and ancient white grape variety, primarily cultivated in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, especially in the provinces of Bologna and Modena. This grape produces wines characterised by a delicate aromatic profile, marked by floral notes of acacia and hawthorn, complemented by subtle hints of green apple, pear, and a faint touch of citrus. On the palate, Montuni wines are typically fresh and lively, featuring a light to medium body, crisp acidity, and a clean, slightly mineral finish.
The most common styles made from Montuni are dry or off-dry still wines, often vinified as monovarietal bottlings or sometimes blended with other local varieties. There is also a tradition of lightly sparkling (frizzante) versions, which highlight the grape’s zesty freshness.
Thanks to their bright acidity and subtle aromatics, Montuni wines pair exceptionally well with a variety of dishes. They are particularly well-suited to seafood such as grilled prawns or seafood risotto, light pasta dishes with vegetable sauces, and delicate appetisers like mozzarella or carpaccio. These versatile wines also complement soft cheeses and are a delightful choice as an aperitif.
