Lambrusco Salamino is a distinguished grape variety primarily cultivated in Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy, especially around the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia. This variety is celebrated for creating vibrant, lively sparkling red wines characterised by an intense ruby hue and pronounced frothy mousse. On the nose, Lambrusco Salamino reveals enticing aromas of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and plums, often complemented by delicate floral notes, a hint of spice, and sometimes subtle earthy undertones. The palate is usually fresh and fruit-forward, offering a harmonious balance between bright acidity, gentle tannins, and a delightful effervescence. Residual sugar levels vary, resulting in both dry (secco) and off-dry to sweet (amabile, dolce) expressions.
Typical styles include frizzante (lightly sparkling) and spumante (fully sparkling) wines, each showcasing the grape’s natural vivacity and approachability. Lambrusco Salamino pairs exceptionally well with the rich culinary traditions of the region. Its refreshing acidity and vivacious bubbles make it a superb partner for cured meats such as prosciutto di Parma, mortadella, hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano, and classic dishes including lasagne and tortellini in brodo. It also has the versatility to complement spicy or tomato-based fare and, in sweeter versions, fruit desserts.
