Fortana is a traditional Italian grape variety, predominantly cultivated in the Emilia-Romagna region, particularly in the provinces of Ferrara and Parma, as well as in parts of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The grape is renowned for producing wines with an intensely deep ruby hue and a distinctive aromatic profile. On the nose, Fortana exhibits fragrances of ripe red cherries, wild berries, and subtle hints of dried flowers, complemented by earthy undertones and a gentle spiciness.
On the palate, Fortana wines are typically light to medium-bodied, with lively acidity and soft tannins, resulting in a refreshing and approachable structure. The flavour profile features bright notes of tart cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, occasionally accented by hints of liquorice or forest floor, culminating in a dry and slightly savoury finish.
Fortana is most commonly vinified as a still dry red or, more traditionally, as a lightly sparkling (frizzante) style called Fortana del Taro. Its vibrant acidity and moderate alcohol make it an excellent partner for a range of foods. Recommended pairings include cured meats such as salami and prosciutto, rich pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces, grilled sausages, and semi-aged cheeses, enhancing both the wine and the culinary experience.
