Pignoletto is an ancient white grape variety, predominantly cultivated in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, especially in the Colli Bolognesi and the area surrounding Modena and Bologna. Its aromatic profile is characterised by delicate floral notes, such as acacia and hawthorn, combined with hints of green apple, pear, and sometimes subtle citrus undertones. On the palate, Pignoletto wines are typically fresh and lively, displaying a crisp acidity, light to medium body, and gentle minerality that enhances their elegance.
Winemakers craft Pignoletto into a range of styles, with the most renowned being the sparkling (frizzante or spumante) versions, which offer an appealing fine mousse and refreshing finish. Still (tranquillo) and lightly sparkling variants are also popular, each showcasing the grape’s natural vivacity and aromatic finesse.
Pignoletto pairs exceptionally well with light appetisers, seafood dishes, delicate vegetable risottos, and traditional Italian antipasti. Its vibrant acidity and subtle fruit notes also make it a fine match for soft cheeses and cured meats. Overall, Pignoletto stands out for its versatility and its ability to elevate the flavours of a wide variety of dishes, making it a favourite among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts alike.
