Red Grape Variety

Casavecchia is an ancient red grape variety indigenous to the Campania region in southern Italy, particularly thriving in the provinces of Caserta and Benevento. This rare varietal lends itself to the production of distinctive wines, prized for their deep, ruby colour and intensity. Aromatically, Casavecchia wines exude notes of dark berries such as blackberry and black cherry, complemented by subtle hints of sweet spice, violet, and earthy undertones. On the palate, these wines tend to be full-bodied, with robust tannins, a well-structured framework, and a persistent finish, often displaying flavours of ripe plum, liquorice, and a gentle touch of tobacco.

The principal viticultural area for Casavecchia is the Terre del Volturno IGT, where it is often produced as a varietal or blended with other local grapes. Typical styles range from fresh, youthful reds designed for early drinking to more complex, oak-aged expressions with greater depth and ageing potential.

Casavecchia pairs excellently with hearty dishes, reflecting its bold character. It is particularly well-suited to rich meat-based dishes such as braised beef, game stews, roasted lamb, as well as mature cheeses and rustic pasta preparations featuring wild mushrooms or truffle.
