Falanghina is an ancient white grape variety indigenous to southern Italy, particularly thriving in the Campania region, with notable plantings in Benevento and the volcanic slopes around Naples. The grape is celebrated for producing wines with a vibrant and expressive profile. On the nose, Falanghina typically presents lively aromas of white flowers, ripe citrus fruits, and orchard fruits such as apple and pear, often layered with hints of herbal notes and a characteristic mineral undertone. On the palate, these wines are generally fresh and medium-bodied, balancing crisp acidity with flavours of lemon, grapefruit, stone fruit, and sometimes a subtle saline finish, reflecting the influence of volcanic soils.
Falanghina lends itself to a variety of wine styles, most commonly as a dry, zesty white, though increasingly produced as sparkling and even late-harvest renditions. Ideal serving companions include seafood dishes such as grilled prawns, calamari, or linguine alle vongole, as well as light salads, vegetable antipasti, and fresh cheeses like mozzarella di bufala. Its lively character and bright acidity also make it an excellent partner for Mediterranean cuisine, enhancing the flavours of both the food and the wine.
