Piedirosso is a distinctive red grape variety native to Campania, southern Italy. Renowned for its deep ruby colour, the grape typically yields wines with enticing aromas of ripe red cherries, blackberries, violets and a subtle hint of spice or earthy mineral notes. On the palate, Piedirosso wines are medium-bodied and soft, with moderate tannins and vibrant acidity, lending a freshness that enhances their drinkability. Often, flavours of wild berries, plum and dusty herbs are matched by a gentle savouriness and a lingering, elegant finish.
The principal growing regions for Piedirosso include the volcanic soils around Naples, especially in the appellations of Campi Flegrei, Vesuvio, and Ischia. It is frequently used either as a varietal wine or blended with other indigenous grapes such as Aglianico in DOC wines.
Typical styles range from youthful, fruit-driven reds to more structured, age-worthy examples, occasionally showing a slight pleasant effervescence when young. Piedirosso pairs exceptionally well with classic Neapolitan cuisine – think tomato-based pasta dishes, pizza Margherita, grilled vegetables and roasted meats. Its refreshing acidity also makes it a suitable partner for lighter poultry dishes and mature cheeses.
