Coda di Volpe is an ancient white grape variety native to the Campania region of southern Italy, whose name means 'tail of the fox' due to the elongated shape of its grape bunches. Renowned for its subtle complexity, it typically produces medium-bodied wines with a delicate aromatic profile. On the nose, Coda di Volpe offers notes of ripe pear, golden apple, and gentle hints of white peach, complemented by floral undertones and a touch of honey. The palate is refreshing, marked by mild acidity and a soft, rounded texture, often finishing with nuances of almond and mineral.
The grape thrives primarily in Campania, particularly in the provinces around Avellino and Benevento, where it benefits from volcanic soils and a Mediterranean climate. Coda di Volpe is most commonly vinified as a single-varietal wine, but is also seen in blends and as a component in DOC wines such as Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco.
Typical styles include fresh, unoaked whites designed for early drinking, although some producers experiment with more structured, age-worthy versions. This versatile wine pairs exceptionally well with seafood dishes, light pasta, grilled vegetables, and delicate white meats, enhancing subtle flavours without overwhelming the palate.
