Pinot Nero, known internationally as Pinot Noir, is celebrated for its refined elegance and expressive character. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, often complemented by delicate floral hints of violet and nuanced earthy undertones. On the palate, Pinot Nero is typically medium-bodied, with silky tannins and bright acidity, presenting flavours of fresh red berries, subtle spice, and, with age, savoury notes of forest floor and truffle.
The principal regions for Pinot Nero cultivation include Burgundy in France, northern Italy (notably Alto Adige and Oltrepò Pavese), parts of Germany (Spätburgunder), and cool climate areas in the New World such as Central Otago in New Zealand and the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
Typical styles range from vibrant, fruit-forward bottlings ideal for early drinking to more structured, age-worthy wines matured in oak. While most expressions are still, sparkling versions feature notably in Italy’s Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese.
Pinot Nero’s versatility at the table is exceptional. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, game birds, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, and charcuterie. Its finely tuned acidity and subtle tannins also complement semi-soft cheeses and earthy vegetable dishes.
