Malmsey, known internationally as Malvasia, is a historic grape variety renowned for producing exceptionally rich and fragrant wines. Aromatically, Malmsey exhibits pronounced notes of ripe tropical fruits such as mango, peach, and apricot, interwoven with hints of honey, orange blossom, toasted nuts, and occasionally a touch of spice. On the palate, it delivers an opulent mouthfeel and a luscious sweetness, balanced by vibrant acidity and layers of dried fruits, caramel, and a subtle, lingering finish.
The grape is most famously cultivated on the Portuguese island of Madeira, where it contributes to the classic sweet Madeiran wine style. It also thrives in various Mediterranean regions, including Italy, Spain (particularly the Canary Islands), and Greece, where it is vinified into both dry and sweet expressions.
Typical wines made from Malmsey are most recognised for their rich, sweet fortified styles—especially Madeira Malmsey, lauded for its concentration, complexity, and remarkable longevity. However, some producers also explore drier versions that showcase its aromatic finesse.
Malmsey pairs exceptionally well with blue cheeses, rich pâté, fruit-based desserts, and nutty pastries. Its decadent profile also complements dishes such as foie gras or can simply be enjoyed as a luxurious digestif.
