Encruzado is a distinguished white grape variety primarily grown in Portugal’s Dão region, where its reputation for producing refined and age-worthy wines is well established. The aromatic profile of Encruzado is notably complex, with fresh citrus notes—such as lemon and grapefruit—subtly complemented by delicate hints of white flowers, green apple, and stone fruits like peach or apricot. Often, a gentle mineral edge underscores the bouquet, alongside refined suggestions of almond and herbs. On the palate, Encruzado wines are typically medium-bodied with a crisp yet rounded acidity, offering flavours of ripe orchard fruits, a touch of spice and sometimes a subtle, smoky nuance. The grape’s natural structure makes it suitable for both unoaked, fresh styles and oak-matured expressions with richer, creamy textures.
While Dão remains the principal home of Encruzado, limited plantings can be found in select neighbouring regions, though these are relatively rare. Encruzado pairs exceptionally well with seafood such as grilled fish and shellfish, poultry dishes with citrus or herbal sauces, creamy risottos, and mild, nutty cheeses. Its balance and elegance make it an excellent partner for both light appetisers and more nuanced gastronomic creations.
