Red Grape Variety

Ramisco is a rare and distinctive red grape variety, native to the sandy soils of Colares on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. It is renowned for producing wines of remarkable structure and longevity, often matured for extended periods before release. On the nose, Ramisco exhibits a bouquet of wild berries, sour cherries, and dried herbs, underscored by minerality and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is marked by high acidity and prominent tannins, lending freshness and a sinewy texture. Flavours unfold gradually, revealing notes of redcurrant, forest floor, violets, and a touch of peppery spice, with a lingering, austere finish.

Ramisco thrives almost exclusively in the unique terroir of the Colares DOC, where it is typically planted ungrafted due to the region’s phylloxera-resistant sandy soils. The resulting wines are traditionally light in colour but robust in character, with impressive ageing potential.

Classic Ramisco wines pair excellently with robust dishes such as game, roasted lamb, or rich stews. They also complement aged cheeses and mushroom-based recipes, which harmonise with the grape’s earthy complexity. Ramisco’s vibrant acidity makes it a fine match for traditional Portuguese cuisine, particularly dishes featuring savoury herbs and slow-cooked meats.
