Ugni Blanc, also known as Trebbiano in Italy, is a versatile white grape variety highly valued for its freshness and subtle complexity. The grape yields wines characterised by delicate aromas of green apple, citrus zest, white flowers, and occasionally a gentle herbal or almond note. On the palate, Ugni Blanc is renowned for its bright acidity, light body, and clean, refreshing finish, often displaying flavours of crisp lemon and green pear.
Predominantly cultivated in the southwest of France, Ugni Blanc thrives in regions such as Cognac, Armagnac, and parts of Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon. While it is best known as the foundation for world-class brandies, it also produces lively still and sparkling wines.
Typical styles include fresh, unoaked dry whites with a mineral edge, as well as base wines for distilled spirits. The naturally high acidity of Ugni Blanc makes it an excellent pairing for seafood, fresh oysters, and shellfish. It also complements goat’s cheese, light salads with vinaigrette, and delicately flavoured poultry dishes. Ugni Blanc’s understated elegance and refreshing profile make it ideal for enhancing light, summery menus or serving as a chilled aperitif.
