Red Grape Variety

Chancellor is a French-American hybrid grape variety, notable for its ability to produce deeply coloured, medium-bodied red wines. On the nose, Chancellor offers aromas of ripe dark cherry, plum, and subtle notes of blackberry, accompanied by hints of cocoa and delicate spiciness. The palate is typically fruit-forward, with supple tannins, moderate acidity, and flavours echoing dark berries and soft oak, resulting in a supple and approachable wine style.

Originating from 19th-century France, Chancellor found particular success in North America, especially in the eastern United States and parts of Canada. New York’s Finger Lakes region, along with Pennsylvania and Ontario, are among the most renowned areas cultivating this variety, owing to Chancellor’s good resistance to cold and fungal diseases.

The typical style is a dry to off-dry red wine, sometimes blended to enhance complexity. Winemakers may also craft lighter rosés and, less commonly, dessert wines from Chancellor.

Ideal food pairings include roasted poultry, grilled pork, mild game, and subtly spiced vegetarian dishes. Its balanced profile makes it a versatile companion for semi-hard cheeses and charcuterie. Chancellor’s fruit-driven nature and smooth texture allow it to pair harmoniously with a wide array of dishes, making it an approachable choice for many occasions.
