Frontenac is a resilient cold-hardy grape variety, originally developed at the University of Minnesota, that has gained increasing prominence in the emerging wine regions of the Upper Midwest and the north-eastern United States, as well as select Canadian provinces. Known for its deep garnet colour and expressive aromatic profile, Frontenac typically exhibits intense notes of cherry, blackcurrant, and plum, often complemented by subtle hints of chocolate and spice. On the palate, wines made from Frontenac are medium- to full-bodied, displaying vibrant acidity, soft tannins, and a lingering fruit-forward finish. Due to its versatility, Frontenac is vinified in a variety of styles including dry red, rosé, and even dessert and fortified wines, with some producers experimenting successfully with sparkling expressions. Its innate acidity and fruity character make it an excellent match for a range of dishes. Frontenac pairs particularly well with grilled red meats, hearty stews, barbecued pork, and flavourful, mature cheeses. For lighter styles, such as rosé, it harmonises beautifully with poultry, charcuterie, and roasted root vegetables, allowing its bright berry notes to shine alongside complex savoury flavours.
