Albariño is a distinguished white grape variety predominantly grown in the Rías Baixas region of Galicia, north-western Spain, with additional plantings in northern Portugal under the name Alvarinho. It is known for producing aromatic wines with high acidity and elegance. The bouquet typically features vibrant citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit, complemented by stone fruit elements such as peach and apricot, with occasional hints of green apple and melon. Subtle floral accents and a characteristic saline minerality impart freshness and complexity.
On the palate, Albariño wines tend to be dry, crisp, and medium-bodied, delivering refreshing flavours that echo the nose, and often ending with a lingering, zesty finish. While the majority of Albariño is vinified in a youthful, unoaked style to preserve its aromatic purity, some producers experiment with lees ageing or gentle oak maturation for added texture and nuance.
Albariño pairs exceptionally well with seafood, including oysters, prawns, and grilled fish, owing to its bright acidity and saline edge. It also complements light salads, fresh cheeses, and Asian cuisine. This grape epitomises the coastal terroir from which it hails, making it a preferred choice for refined, food-friendly white wines.
