Red Grape Variety

Mission is a historic grape variety, most notably recognised for its pivotal role in the early viticultural history of the Americas, particularly California and Mexico. Known as Listán Prieto in Spain, Mission delivers wines with a light-to-medium body and a distinctive aromatic profile. On the nose, it offers delicate notes of red berries, wild strawberry, and subtle floral hints, occasionally complemented by gentle spiciness and earthy undertones. The palate is often fresh and supple, with vivid acidity, soft tannins, and flavours recalling cherry, raspberry, and a whisper of dried herbs.

Principal wine regions include California’s Central Valley and the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico, where Mission has experienced a modest revival by innovative producers. It is also cultivated in South America, especially in Chile under the name País and in Argentina as Criolla.

Mission grapes produce a range of wine styles, from light, refreshing reds to rosés and, historically, sweet, fortified Angelica wines. Today, many wines favour a crisp, unoaked style that highlights the grape’s natural fruitiness.

Recommended food pairings include grilled poultry, roasted pork, mildly spiced Mexican dishes, and Mediterranean vegetable casseroles, where the wine’s vibrant freshness and red fruit character harmonise beautifully with a variety of flavours.
