Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, is a robust red grape variety renowned for producing deeply coloured, full-bodied wines with impressive ageing potential. Its aromatic profile features concentrated notes of blackberry, blueberry, plum, and blackcurrant, often intertwined with hints of black pepper, dark chocolate, liquorice, and a subtle floral undertone. On the palate, Petite Sirah delivers powerful tannins, vibrant acidity, and dense fruit flavours, resulting in a rich, structured wine with excellent depth and complexity.
Primarily cultivated in California—most notably in regions such as Napa Valley, Sonoma, and Paso Robles—it is also found in limited quantities in Australia, Israel, and Mexico. Petite Sirah wines are typically crafted as bold single varietal expressions or occasionally blended to add structure and colour.
These wines are particularly well-suited to hearty fare, making them an excellent match for slow-cooked beef, lamb shank, game dishes, or richly spiced barbecue. Robust cheeses such as aged cheddar or Stilton also serve as ideal companions. For an optimal tasting experience, decanting is recommended to soften the tannins and unlock the full spectrum of Petite Sirah’s vibrant aromatics and flavours.
